The New Free ETA: Entry Rules 2026
- The headline change: from 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka’s 30-day tourist ETA is free of charge for 40 nationalities, including India, Pakistan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the UK, US and most of Europe, with double entry allowed inside the 30 days. It follows your passport, not your Dubai residency.
- Free does not mean skip it: everyone still applies online at the official portal (eta.gov.lk) before flying: passport bio page, travel details, approval usually within hours, and airlines check it at the gate. Print it and keep it on your phone.
- Not on the list? A few common expat nationalities (Bangladeshi and Filipino among them) still pay the standard or SAARC-discounted ETA fee through the same portal. Stays beyond 30 days are extended in Colombo for a fee.

Flights, Money & the Two-Monsoon Trick

- Galle Fort (UNESCO): a complete 17th-century Dutch fortified town on the south coast: ramparts for the sunset walk, lighthouse lanes, cafes in merchant houses. Stay a night inside the walls rather than day-tripping it.
- Kandy (UNESCO): the hill capital around its lake, home of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic; time your visit to a puja ceremony for the drums and ritual, dress with shoulders and knees covered.
- Sigiriya (UNESCO): the 200-metre rock citadel rising sheer from the jungle, 1,200 steps past ancient frescoes and the lion’s paws to a 5th-century palace in the sky. Climb at 7 AM opening: cooler, quieter, and the light on the plains is the reward. - The Kandy–Ella train is the famous one: six to seven slow hours through tea terraces, cloud forest and viaducts, ending near Ella’s Nine Arch Bridge. Book reserved seats days ahead (they sell out; 2nd class reserved balances windows and comfort), sit on the right side heading to Ella, and if seats are gone, ride the shorter Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) to Ella leg, which holds the best scenery anyway.
- Ella itself: the backpacker village with the sunrise walk up Little Adam’s Peak (45 gentle minutes) and cafes facing the gap in the mountains.
- Tea country: around Nuwara Eliya, colonial-era factories run tastings where you learn why “Ceylon” still means tea; cool air, roses, and hot thermoses on misty mornings.
- Safaris, choose by animal: Yala for the best leopard density on earth (dawn drives, February to July peak); Udawalawe for guaranteed wild elephants in open country, the better pick with kids; Minneriya (near Sigiriya) for “The Gathering,” when hundreds of elephants converge on the reservoir roughly August to October. Half-day jeep safaris run affordably; insist on drivers who keep respectful distances.
