The same city runs one of the cleanest, cheapest metros anywhere, sells a AED 12 plate of biryani in Deira that outperforms most hotel buffets, and lets you cross its oldest waterway on a wooden boat for one dirham. So, is Dubai expensive? The honest answer is that the gap between its reputation and its street-level prices is bigger than almost any city we know, and it works in the visitor’s favour, provided you know which prices are which.

Two footnotes that catch people out: hotels add a Tourism Dirham fee of up to about AED 20 per room per night depending on the property’s category, and upscale restaurants add a 10 percent service charge. Pad any budget by 10 to 15 percent for the extras that always creep in.

Food is where Dubai’s dual personality is clearest, because both of these lists are true at the same time:

The pattern is simple: eat where residents eat and a full, genuinely good food day costs AED 60 to 100. Eat only where the skyline views are and AED 400 a day happens without trying. Most visitors are happiest mixing the two: cafeteria lunches, one memorable dinner.
Getting Around: The Cheapest Part of Dubai
- Metro: AED 3 to 7.5 per trip depending on zones with a Nol Silver card (the card costs AED 25 including AED 19 of credit). The red line connects the airport, Downtown, Mall of the Emirates and the Marina, which covers most tourist geography. A day pass is about AED 20–22.
- Abra across the Creek: AED 1. Still the best-value experience in the city, full stop. It drops you between the Gold and Spice Souks.
- Taxis: AED 12 flagfall in the daytime plus roughly AED 2 per km; a typical in-city hop runs AED 20 to 45. From the airport the flagfall is higher (about AED 24) and Downtown costs roughly AED 70 to 90. Careem and Uber price similarly.
- The honest rule: metro plus the occasional taxi beats renting a car for most visitors, and in summer you will want those taxis, because Dubai is not a walking city from June to September.
Attractions: What the Big Tickets Cost

This is the list of cheap things to do in Dubai that makes a budget trip work, because several of the city’s best experiences cost nothing:

- Alcohol. The single biggest gap between Dubai and most cities: around AED 50 for a pint, AED 60+ for cocktails, and imported wine at multiples of home prices. Happy hours (commonly 4 to 7 PM) and brunch packages are the workarounds.
- Peak-season hotels. December to March rates can double summer prices for identical rooms, with New Year the extreme.
- Brunches and beach clubs. AED 250 to 500+ per head; brilliant, but one per trip is plenty.
- Anything bought at a hotel desk. Concierge bookings for tours and activities routinely carry 30 to 50 percent markups over direct prices.
- Water in restaurants and taxis at rush hour: small lines, but they add up; supermarkets sell the same bottle for AED 1 to 2.

- 1. Come in shoulder or summer months. Hotels drop 40 to 60 percent from June to September, and October, April and May balance price against weather beautifully.
- 2. Book every attraction online, never at the gate. It is cheaper almost everywhere and skips a queue.
- 3. Never book tours at the hotel desk. The 30 to 50 percent concierge markup is the least necessary spend in Dubai.
- 4. Get a Nol card on day one and default to the metro.
- 5. Eat local by day, scenic by night. One view dinner beats three mediocre ones.
- 6. Drink at happy hour or not at all; it is the single largest controllable cost.
- 7. Time the Dubai Shopping Festival (January) if shopping matters; bargain in the souks regardless, starting at half the asking price.
