The complication is the weather. Late August in Dubai is still firmly in the 40s, which rules out the “just go to the beach” plan that works so well in February. The good news is that this specific window happens to be an excellent time to be elsewhere: several destinations within a short flight of Dubai are at their seasonal best in August, and a few are actively cooler than the Gulf. The Confirmed Dates (and the Date Everyone Got Wrong)

- The long weekend runs Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August for anyone on a standard Saturday to Sunday weekend, with a return to work on Monday 31 August.
- The religious occasion itself, Mawlid Al Nabawi, corresponds to 12 Rabi Al Awwal and is expected to fall on Tuesday 25 August, subject to moon sighting.
- The holiday was moved to the Friday under UAE rules introduced in January 2025 that allow certain public holidays to shift to the start or end of the working week, improving flexibility. Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha are excluded from that rule.
One more piece of timing that matters: the 2026-27 school year begins on Monday 31 August, so this is the final weekend of the summer break for families. Expect demand from UAE residents to be concentrated and early.

Maldives
The classic three-day answer, because the flight is short enough that a long weekend genuinely works. August sits in the quieter season, which means noticeably better resort rates and strong manta and whale-shark sightings on certain atolls, in exchange for the odd tropical shower rather than all-day rain. Every nationality gets a free 30-day visa on arrival, so there is no paperwork blocking a late booking. Choose a speedboat-transfer resort rather than a seaplane one for a short trip, since seaplanes only fly in daylight.
Malaysia
This is the one most people overlook, and August is genuinely Malaysia’s sweet spot from a UAE starting point. Kuala Lumpur is surprisingly dry in June to August, while the east coast islands, Perhentian, Redang and Tioman, are in peak season with the calmest seas and the year’s best diving visibility. In other words, the Gulf’s most punishing month is Malaysia’s best. Add Thursday and Monday and it becomes a proper trip rather than a rushed one.
Bali
August falls inside Bali’s dry season, which runs April to October, so the weather is about as reliable as it gets. It is the longest flight on this list and only makes sense if you can take both Thursday and Monday, but if you can, the payoff is significant. Remember the two separate entry payments: the visa on arrival and the Bali tourist levy, plus the online arrival and customs forms.

Salalah, Oman
The most seasonally specific recommendation on this page. Between roughly late June and September, the khareef monsoon turns Oman’s southern Dhofar region green, with mist rolling over hillsides, waterfalls running and temperatures dramatically cooler than the Gulf plains. It is one of the few places on the Arabian Peninsula where late August is the best time to visit rather than the worst, and it is close enough to work as a three-day trip without any extra leave.
Georgia, Armenia & Azerbaijan
The Caucasus trio remains the smartest short-haul cool-weather option from Dubai: mountain air, green valleys, serious food and wine, and summer temperatures that feel like relief rather than endurance. Georgia offers a particularly generous stay allowance for many nationalities, and all three are easy on a four-day break. Check your specific passport requirement before booking.
Turkey & Central Asia
Istanbul and the Turkish coast are busy in late August but comfortable, and Cappadocia’s balloon season continues. Further out, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan offer genuinely different scenery and cooler evenings, though both are better suited to the five-day version of this weekend.
Staying in the UAE: What Actually Works
Not everyone wants an airport on a three-day weekend, and August staycation rates are the lowest of the year for a reason. The trick is choosing indoor and water-based things, and treating the outdoors as an early-morning or after-dark activity only.

Booking Tips for a Short Window
- Book this week, not next. With just over a fortnight to go and the whole country off at once, short-haul fares and the better hotels move first.
- Fly out Thursday evening if you can. A late Thursday departure buys you a full extra day for the price of a few hours of leave.
- Check visa lead times before committing. Some destinations issue on arrival, others need days of processing. Confirm your passport’s requirement first; we verify this for every booking.
- Watch the return leg. Sunday 30 August evening flights back into Dubai will be full of residents returning before school and work on the Monday. Book that seat early.
