GITEX 2026 & Expo City Dubai: The Business Traveller’s Complete Guide

BUSINESS TRAVEL — GITEX GLOBAL 2026

By Mayra Tours Team  |  Published: 19 July 2026  |  Read time: 9 mins

GITEX GLOBAL 2026 runs 7–11 December at the Dubai Exhibition Centre in Expo City Dubai, a major change from its traditional October slot at the World Trade Centre. The world’s largest tech and AI show drew over 180,000 attendees from 180+ countries and 5,000+ exhibiting companies in its last edition. For business travellers the essentials are: the on-site Rove Expo City hotel and Dubai South properties sell out first, the direct Red Line metro reaches Downtown in about 40 minutes, Al Maktoum Airport (DWC) is just 20 minutes away, and the UAE’s new Events visa category gives conference attendees a dedicated entry route. Mayra Tours bundles the visa, hotel and transfers into one booking.

If you attended GITEX before, forget half of what you know about the logistics. The event has moved: new month, new venue, new travel math. December instead of October means peak tourist season pricing all around it, and Expo City instead of the World Trade Centre means the hotel and transport playbook that worked for years now points at the wrong end of the city.

We arrange trips for exhibitors, delegates and startup founders every conference season, many flying in from Lagos, Nairobi, Mumbai and beyond. This guide covers the new venue logistics, where to actually stay, how the new Events visa works, and the small planning decisions that separate a smooth GITEX week from an expensive scramble.

GITEX GLOBAL is one of the world’s top three technology exhibitions and the largest tech and AI show on the calendar, spanning artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, fintech, smart cities and a massive startup wing. It is the single busiest business-travel week of Dubai’s year, and in 2026 it lands in the heart of peak tourist season, which makes early planning less of a nice-to-have and more of a survival skill.

What Changed: New Dates, New Venue

Two structural changes define GITEX 2026, and both affect your booking strategy:

The December slot

GITEX traditionally ran in October. The 2026 edition runs 7–11 December, right in Dubai’s peak season, overlapping the run-up to UAE National Day celebrations, winter tourism and pre-holiday corporate travel. Flights and hotels are structurally more expensive in December than October, and inventory tightens weeks earlier. Whatever your usual booking lead time was for GITEX, add a month.

The Expo City venue

The show moves to the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) at Expo City Dubai, the 45,000 square metre venue built for Expo 2020, sitting between Dubai Marina and Al Maktoum International Airport on the city’s southwestern edge. The practical consequences: hotels around the old World Trade Centre location are no longer the smart pick, Al Maktoum (DWC) becomes the closer airport at roughly 20 minutes versus 45 from Dubai International (DXB), and the Route 2020 metro extension becomes your best friend for the week.

Bonus of the new venue: Expo City itself is worth your downtime. Al Wasl Plaza and its landmark dome sit at the centre, the Terra and Alif pavilions remain open as permanent attractions, and the district is fully walkable, so a 30-minute gap between meetings is genuinely usable.

Getting to Expo City: Metro, Taxi & Airports

  • Metro (the smart default): Expo 2020 Station sits on the Red Line’s Route 2020 branch with direct trains, no transfer required. Downtown and the World Trade Centre area are about 40 minutes away, Dubai Marina and Ibn Battuta roughly 15–20 minutes. During GITEX week the metro reliably beats road traffic at opening and closing hours.
  • Taxi and ride-hailing: Expo City to Downtown runs about AED 60–80 in normal traffic. Budget more time and money at 5–6 PM when the expo empties; surge pricing at the taxi ranks is a daily reality during major shows.
  • From the airports: Al Maktoum (DWC) is around 20 minutes by car, Dubai International (DXB) 45 minutes, and Abu Dhabi International also about 45 minutes down the E11. If your route offers a DWC option, take it for this event.
  • Driving: Expo City has extensive parking, but expo-week fill-up is real. Arrive before 9:30 AM or use the metro.

Where to Stay for GITEX 2026

Area Example Options Distance to DEC Best For
Inside Expo City Rove Expo City (the only on-site hotel) Under 10 min walk Exhibitors, anyone doing all 5 days
Dubai South / DIP Premier Inn DIP, Hilton Garden Inn Al Maktoum, Delta by Marriott DIP 5 min by metro / 10–15 min drive Value seekers, DWC flyers
Dubai Marina / JBR / Ibn Battuta Rove Dubai Marina, Oaks Ibn Battuta Gate, Crowne Plaza Marina 15–25 min by metro Evening dining, client entertainment
Downtown Rove Downtown, Vida Downtown ~40 min by metro Combining GITEX with Dubai HQ meetings

Rove Expo City deserves a special mention: it is the only hotel inside the venue district, under a 10-minute walk from the exhibition halls, with a co-working lounge, soundproofed rooms and a rooftop pool overlooking the Al Wasl dome. It is also exactly why it sells out earliest of everything on this list. If your dates are fixed, book it the week you confirm attendance, and if it is gone, Dubai South plus the 5-minute metro hop is the closest substitute at a friendlier rate.

December warning: the old GITEX habit of booking hotels 4–6 weeks out will not survive contact with peak season. For the December 2026 edition, treat 8–12 weeks as the sane window for anything on this list, and earlier for Rove Expo City.

The New Events Visa (And Who Needs It)

The UAE’s 2026 visa overhaul introduced a dedicated Events visa for delegates, organisers and staff attending conferences and exhibitions, separate from the standard tourist visa and designed for exactly this kind of trip. Alongside it, visa-free and visa-on-arrival lists expanded, so your first step is confirming which lane you are in.

  • Visa-free and visa-on-arrival passports (including US, UK, EU and, with qualifying residence permits, Indian passport holders): no pre-approval needed for a standard GITEX visit.
  • Pre-approval nationalities (most African and South Asian passports without qualifying permits): apply through an authorised channel 5–7 working days ahead at minimum, longer in December’s rush. The Events visa or a standard tourist e-visa both work for attending; we advise per profile.
  • Everyone: 2026’s stricter rules apply. Confirmed return ticket, hotel proof and adequate funds are checked more often, and overstays now attract AED 50 per day from day one with zero grace period. Our full breakdown is in the Dubai visa rules 2026 guide.

The Book-Early Checklist

In order of how quickly they become a problem: your visa (processing queues stretch in December), your hotel (on-site and Dubai South first), your GITEX badge (online registration only, with prices climbing closer to the date), airport transfers for arrival and the brutal final-day exodus, evening reservations for client entertainment, and a return flight that lands safely inside your visa validity.

After Hours: Client Entertainment That Works

GITEX evenings are where deals actually close, and December weather is Dubai at its absolute best, 20–26°C and clear. The formats our business guests rebook year after year:

  • Evening desert safari with a private camp: the single most effective client experience in Dubai, dune drive at sunset, dinner under the stars, and back by 10 PM. Details and formats in our desert safari guide; private vehicles for delegations book out fastest in December.
  • Marina dinner cruise: low effort, high impression, 2 hours, walkable from Marina hotels.
  • Burj Khalifa At The Top at sunset: the classic first-timer wow moment; combo tickets and timing tricks are covered in our Burj Khalifa tickets guide.
  • A spare half day? The Dubai city tour compresses Old and New Dubai into the gap between the expo and a late flight.

What Business Guests Tell Us

★★★★★

“We exhibited last edition with a team of six from Nairobi. Mayra handled all six visas in one batch, put us in Dubai South two metro stops from the venue, and had a driver waiting on the final evening when every taxi app showed 40-minute waits. The visa batch alone saved me a week of back and forth.”

Kevin, fintech founder, Nairobi (2025 edition)
★★★★★

“I nearly booked my usual Trade Centre hotel out of habit before realising the venue moved. Their team caught it, switched me to the Marina with a direct metro ride, and built in a desert safari for my two biggest clients. Both signed before we flew home. Worth every dirham.”

Priyanka, SaaS sales director, Mumbai (planning the Dec 2026 edition)
★★★★☆

“As a startup on a budget I expected to be an afterthought. Instead they found me a Premier Inn near the DIP metro at a rate I could justify, sorted my visa in five days, and told me exactly which morning to arrive to beat the badge queues. Only wish I had booked my flight earlier, December fares climb fast.”

Frequently Asked Questions: GITEX 2026 Travel

Q: When and where is GITEX 2026?

GITEX GLOBAL 2026 runs 7–11 December 2026 at the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) in Expo City Dubai. This is a change from the event’s traditional October dates and World Trade Centre venue, so travel plans based on previous editions need updating.

Q: Which airport is best for GITEX 2026?

Al Maktoum International (DWC) is closest at roughly 20 minutes from Expo City, while Dubai International (DXB) is about 45 minutes. DXB has far more flight options, so most attendees still land there; book a transfer or use the metro network with one interchange.

Q: Where should I stay for GITEX 2026?

Rove Expo City is the only hotel inside the venue district and sells out first. Dubai South and Dubai Investments Park offer the best value with a 5-minute metro ride, Marina and JBR balance venue access with evening dining at 15–25 minutes by metro, and Downtown suits those combining GITEX with city meetings at about 40 minutes.

Q: Do I need a visa to attend GITEX?

It depends on your passport. Many nationalities enter visa-free or with visa on arrival, while most African and South Asian passports without qualifying residence permits need pre-approval. The UAE’s new Events visa category also covers conference delegates. Mayra Tours confirms your exact requirement free and processes applications, with batch handling for teams.

Q: How do I get from Expo City to Downtown Dubai?

The Red Line metro from Expo 2020 Station runs direct with no transfer and reaches Downtown in about 40 minutes. A taxi costs roughly AED 60–80 outside peak hours; expect longer times and surge pricing when the expo closes each evening.

Q: How early should I book for GITEX 2026?

Earlier than previous editions. The December dates put GITEX inside Dubai’s peak season, so treat 8–12 weeks out as the sensible window for hotels, earlier for Rove Expo City, and start visa processing at least 2–3 weeks before travel to absorb December queues.
