Can You Leave the Airport During a Dubai Layover?
Three situations cover almost everyone:
- Staying airside: if you remain in the transit area and your connection is under 24 hours, no visa is needed, whatever your passport.
- Visa-free and visa on arrival: citizens of 80+ countries (including the UK, US, EU, GCC and many others) simply clear immigration and walk out, no paperwork needed.
- Everyone else: the 48-hour transit visa, arranged in advance through your UAE-based airline (Emirates or flydubai), is typically free; the 96-hour transit visa costs roughly AED 100–200 and suits longer stopovers. Both must be pre-arranged, not requested on landing.
The Timing Rules That Keep Your Layover Safe
- The 6-hour minimum: immigration out, transport both ways, and security back in eat 2.5–3 hours by themselves. Under 6 total hours, stay airside and enjoy the terminal.
- The 3-hour return rule: be back at DXB three hours before departure. Dubai traffic is kind outside rush hours (7–9:30 AM, 5–8 PM), but this buffer is what makes the dash relaxing instead of reckless.
- The stamp, not the schedule: transit visa validity runs from your passport stamp time, not your flight’s landing time. Note the stamp and count from there.
- Travel light: checked bags on a single ticket usually flow through to your final destination. Cabin bags can go into DXB’s luggage storage so you explore hands-free.
- Same ticket vs separate tickets: separate bookings mean collecting and re-checking bags, which needs both a visa and considerably more time. Plan 4+ hours extra.
